  • “Does it run DOOM?” is the oft-heard phrase as it is the canonical first-port for any system, be it a toaster, touch bar or printer. Programmer, game designer, level designer and DOOM II final boss John Romero delivers a postmortem on the game showing rarely seen material, memorializing its immersive but nerve-wracking 3D environments, networked multiplayer deathmatches, demonic imagery and themes, Barney WADs, exploding barrels, and BFG 9000.

The global dev community meets at WeAreDevelopers, an event dubbed by many as the “Woodstock of Developers”. The WeAreDevelopers World Congress 2019 will be in Berlin on June 6&7 and John will be there again! Get your ticket now.

Muhahahahahahahahaha NEXT computer. Jobs, always the scammer, never the inventor of reality. Woz needs more credit. Romero, kinda in the Woz mode. Never really got the credit he deserved. People think of him as "a level designer" but he was actually a very accomplished coder as well.

What a vacuous and indifferent host. She ruined an otherwise interesting and memorable retrospective.

1992 I became a disabled cop due to a line of duty accident. Workers Comp to the rescue! They sent me to college! I was in a small computer shop looking for a used 386 laptop when I saw some dude playing DOOM! (This must have been winter of '93) Man I loved that game! Played the hell out of it on my main computer, an old 486 SX with sound blaster and a video card of some sort, gave me good speed. Later perhaps 2 years, the first release of another new game that was to take the majority of gamers to new hieghts was released and was set up to play on the School's computers after hours via the network. It was QUAKE, there were no monsters yet but we just played against on another killing each other on those screens. Great fun.
